Thanks. In that case I’d be perfectly fine with the E-350 on an Axis 24.1. While the GVWR difference is 2,000 pounds, the E-350 rating is more conservative and also weighs a little less. I’d be OK with loading an E-350 within 1,000 pounds of the E-450. I’m not suggesting overloading in any way, just that there is more wiggle room on E-350 than E-450.

As an example, to me an E-350 Axis at 12,500 pounds can be as safe as an E-450 at 13,500 pounds. In some ways even more so.

GVWR is based on safety and chassis longevity. If you are only interested in safety, then tire weight rating and brake rotor diameter are the main issues.

Is there any difference in any of these between the E350 and E450. Don't think so.

The only difference between that I have found is frame rail thickness. Not a big diff but larger on e450. Maybe spring rates?

What I do see in driving over 4 years, 34,000 miles is that weight with current driveline is essentially meaningless. We pull a 5200 to 5500 lb open race car trailer. Performance such as merging, passing and pulling hills is much better than expected. MPG steady around 10 whether trailer connected or not. The only large ding was 8.75 coming through western NC from a Memphis race. It worked hard on big grades but not too hard.

The e350 chassis could possibly benefit from a 4.10 or 4.30 gear for MPG.

All Ford specs I’ve seen say otherwise. Where are you getting this information about frame rail thickness as used on Axis/Vegas? Cutaway are specified differently but don’t apply to Axis/Vegas.

Only difference I see in detailed specs is that E-450 has beefier rear axle (9,600 vs 8,500 pounds) and also heavier springs, which add a little over 100 pounds in extra weight. Therefore, net gain in rear axle load capacity is just under 1,000 pounds. Front end are the same on specifications; both 5,000-pound rated.

Besides, most people seem most concerned about tire capacity, and they are same size and load rating.
