If you still have your Thor bag look in the Ford E-Series manual that would have been in there. It should specify the trans fluid.

In the transmission? Down the same hole the dipstick goes in. Just like any other automatic transmission. What did I win?

Yes, you won. We found that out. We got stuck on a look out on Mt Hood. Put into park, took pic, went to put into drive , and stick went past all gears as if all were in neutral. Had to get towed of the mountain, tomorrow we find out what’s wrong. Anyone have any ideas ? We were given several scenarios... one being there’s a shut off so the trans doesn’t get damaged, one electrical, one transmission bad ?? Anyone else have a possible idea as to what went wrong?

Front pump could be bad, torque converter, shift linkage came loose/broke. a few other possibilities.

The transmission holds several quarts of fluid so if it was low enough to prevent vehicle movement you should've had a big puddle underneath at some point or have the undercarriage covered in fluid from a major leak plus dirt stuck to oil covering the rear of the RV.

Doubt its transmission fluid: There was a "bad batch" of Axis/Vegas units where the shifter cable was a little bit too close to the exhaust manifold and the outer covering melts. (Its also possible there is/was a holdback that eventually breaks causing this condition as well.)

Your symptoms somewhat match the issue.

We had it happen several years after purchase (I did notice the smell of the coating melting too but didn't think anything about it).

Crawl underneath and look for something like this near the engine/transmission on the drivers side:

It is likely that yours looks worse and that the inner cable (the part that actually does the shifting) has completely separated (which is why you can move the shifter all over the place and it does nothing at the transmission end).

I was able to convince a Ford dealer to fix it under warranty (my guess is that the fix was cheap enough that they warrantied it to shut me up--hey I'll take it LOL).

Thank you Jamie, this information was great. I shared it with the mechanic and he saw that our shifter cable was indeed fried. A new part has been ordered and we’re crossing our fingers. Thank you so very much. Sue

Thats great to hear (well that it was an easy fix, not that you had the issue to begin with LOL).

This kind of thing is why these forums are so great.

Same here. Ford covered mine under warranty. Hope you can get yours under warranty also.

I didn’t think to even put that out. Our RV is 2014 . We are third owners... I can’t even believe that they would reimburse this repair at this point .... ?
