Which Toilet chemical do you like?

Wondering which toilet chemicals everyone likes?

I was using TankTechs until last weekend when I ran out. I thought this was a good biological product at first, believing the creators hype, but the stench from the holding tank was unbearable each time we flushed the toilet! It was supposed to reduced some hard buildup on the sensors, called struvites, but the tank reads 1/3 full all the time after dumping so I will not be paying the ridiculous price for this product in the future.

Here is what works for me. If one of my sensors in the black tank gets a little whacky after a trip; I dump the tank, rinse it out as good as possible, fill the tank with water, dump a few cups of dish detergent down the toilet into a full tank of water. I also pour the liquid detergent onto the toilet valve and work it a few times to clean it. Drive back to the storage lot, let it sit for a day or two or whatever, dump and rinse again. Usually works and never had any odor. I never use tank chems. except for the detergent.
And never flush with an exh. fan running unless you have doors and windows open and even then, Murphy's law will get you.

I use the Odorlos stuff:
Odorlos 40 oz. Clear Measuring Bottle - Valterra PA352LU52/V77002 - Sewer Deodorizers & Treatment - Camping World

Doesn't seem so bad to me--the only time we really smell anything is when dumping and that is usually coming from the campground's plumbing, not our camper.

As far as the sensors: They usually are clean after 5-10 minutes running our tornado flusher (well at least the tank reads empty after 5-10 minutes).

I use the soap and water method once a year, generally at winterization but when the coach is in use I add a 4oz bottle of Rhino to the black tank. No smells, no mess, and no tablet style casings or linings that don't completely dissolved getting onto sensors or in tank flush ports.

As a note, this months Family Motor Coaching magazine has an article on the SeeLevel Tank Monitoring Systems. Info on the SeeLevel Systems can be found at this link.

I use whatever "blue stuff" liquid is on sale at Walmart, (I NEVER use the pods or powders). The cheap "blue stuff" is my favorite!

Living through three motorhomes, a 5th wheel, and a PopUp, the blue stuff has always worked fine.

And I try to make sure to regularly empty the tanks before they actually fill.

I have found through research, that the vast majority of folks use nothing but water....
Use plenty of water and it should be fine..... many folks suggest priming the tank before a trip with several gallons....

I used the blue stuff in our little portable pottie in the old popup with good result, and have used it on occasion in the RV, but only when we've gotten a little odor issue.... I had a loose air admittance valve for a while..... and one other times when we got some flies coming out of the black tank

My wife and I have found that about 3/4 cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid detergent per tankful works just fine. We switched from chemicals to Dawn several years ago and have had no problems at all with odors or stoppages. Just the plain original Dawn. Lots cheaper and more eco-friendly.

We bought this for our 5th wheel. Liked it a great deal and will probably purchase one for our new MH. It puts chemical in when you flush the toilet. Seemed to use a bit too much so I diluted it. It is not cheap but smells great. Smells like baby powder. Never had a problem with odor. Also they claim that it helps to lubricate the dump valves and I believe it has dish soap in it as well. Because the longer you leave the flush valve open the more chemical you use it could get expensive if you believe in long flushes. I think it would work better with shorter flushes since our bathroom sink goes into the black tank.

We use the Walex green bio-pac. Simply drop a pod in the black tank after each time we empty it. Since 99% of our camping is in parks with full hook-up, we do not put any solids in the black tank.
