Water Heater

How long should you keep water in the water heater. If your unit is in storage, before draining it?

I have a 2017 37.1 Thor Miramar.

Thank you

I've never drained the water heater, if I did, it would only be because I needed to winterize - not a concern where I live.

As long as it isn't freezing outside?

Well, seriously a water filled water heater does experience some slight corrosion sitting for long term. Draining largely eliminates that corrosion, but I wouldn't worry about it. Corrosion rates at ambient temperatures are a tiny fraction of those at elevated hot water temps during use.

There is a string somewhere on this forum concerning draining the hot water tank. In the past, I drained it as part of winterizing. Filled it at first trip out and never worried again through the season until time to winterize.

But then I read some posts on the forum about bacteria forming, especially is using well water (which is what I have). I always wondered why the first usage of hot water on a trip seemed like it was real milky.

So this year I’ve started draining it if no planned use for a week or more.

Copper exchangers are susceptible to corrosion from free chlorine

Well water may contain filamentous iron bacteria or other SRB's which will corrode copper

Higher the TDS the potential increases for dissimilar metal corrosion

If you don"t have good quality water available, drain the water heater
