Universal Joint

I’m only guessing here. Thor Hurricane 35M, pulling out of camp, heard loud “clunk” in reverse & a whir before engaged. No problem in Drive. Drive unit 6 hours and pulled into new site. Turned engine off. While positioning unit on site, same whir, hesitation to engage in forward drive. With effort, unit is now in position for winter season. Comments!!!

That "clunk" sound is usually associated with bad U joints, but not the "hesitation to in engage" you mention. I suggest checking this now rather waiting until spring. U joints are a pretty easy fix and not too expensive but other issues in your drive line might not be.

" whir before engaged" sounds like something much more serious than a U-joint.

Agree...a u-joint usually doesn't work good in one direction but not in another. My guess is a transmission issue...have you checked the transmission fluid (if you can find the dipstick)? Could also be a linkage issue (if they still use that type system).
