V-10 cranks but won't fire.

Freedom Elite V-10 cranks fine but won't fire. Gas gauge not working. If this is a fuel problem how can i verify that the fuel pump is bad or do I just have a bad connection??

We had so many issues with the Ford V10 in pickups at work!! Bad cam position sensors, broken spark plugs, etc, etc.
Not too much us shade tree mechanics can do any more without computers to diagnos the problems.

If you have or can borrow a scan gage, it may point to the problem.
Good luck.

Old shade tree method; Remove your filler cap and put your ear right at the opening. Have someone turn the key on just until the dash lights come on but don't crank the engine. You should be able to hear the pump whirr for about 10 seconds before the relay shuts it off due to no oil pressure. With no gas gage I suspect you have a wiring issue at or close to the tank.

Put a few gallons of gas in then, spray a shot of starting fluid in. If it does not fire you have an electrical problem. If it does fire usually the vacuum sucking the gas through will start your rig and you should be fine.

The Triton is fuel injected with 10 individual injectors. Vacuum does not draw fuel into the cylinders it takes the pressure of the pump to supply the individual injectors. Starting fluid may get the engine to fire for a second or two but without the pump it will not run. The actual correct way to diagnois the pump is to attach a high pressure gage to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and turn the key on. You should see around 30psi.

I would agree 1000% I always use starting fluid as a quick test a guy like me, if it's any more than that I have to take it somewhere else. I do not have the other equipment or expertise. In the motor dept.

Back when I was working as a service tech I learned to dislike starting fluid. I had to tow in and repair a few vehicles that had valve covers and oil pans blown off the engine by someone using too much. Pretty impressive stuff to rip a valve cover off that's bolted down! Used correctly it is ok though, I just prefer to avoid it. YMMV

I can see that also. I should have prefaced that I'm from a kid from the 70s and 80s in a cold weather climate, where we always walked around with a can of starting fluid in our back pocket on the lot.... Awesome Forum!

Ron sez...since you did not state this...if your RV has been sitting all winter..your tank may be empty...may have bad gas...do you use additive?

Fuel Pump

Best idea presented: listen for fuel pump operation with the key to the "on" position. If it doesn't sound, check the fuse panel first before going further. Next, get a OBDII meter or have it scanned by someone that does.

👍

My fuel pump went out suddenly last week. We had stopped to buy a new spare tire, and when they were going to drive it into one of the bays, it started sputtering and then died. It sounded like it was being starved of fuel.

I had then change tire in parking lot while it cooled off for about 20~30 minutes and tried it again. It fired up smoothly but after 3~4 seconds started sputtering again and then died for good.

After a few minutes we checked for noise and heard none, so call tow truck to haul to Ford. It was a very expensive fuel pump, but I just couldn’t do it myself this time. In my van it requires dropping the fuel tank which sits right next to driveshaft.

By the way, my understanding is that fuel level sending unit is often integrated with fuel pump and replaced as one unit. If OP’s fuel level gauge isn’t working, there is a possibility there was already a pre-existing issue in the making.
