V-10 Oil Change Simple

From start to finish the oil change took just under an hour. Previous owner had a petcock installed on oil pan so that sped things up.

Spent $1.35 at Lowes for a clear piece of tubing 2.5' long that slid on the petcock and then down into a milk jug (used two jugs). While that was draining I placed a freezer bag around the oil filter, which hangs vertical instead of horizontal, and removed it. Only had a few drips here that got away from me. Once done underneath scooted out and dumped my 7 quarts in. Ran engine, checked for leaks, waited 10 minutes, oil level good, closed her up.

I will be due for another oil/filter change when our summer travels are over so I will grease some fittings while doing that one.

So for less than $70 the oil/filter can be changed and it gives you the opportunity to look some things over under there, which some truck or RV place won't be checking out.

I have one more messy oil change to do - the fumoto valve is on the bench waiting to be installed... Then I can join you in the simple oil changes...

Really is easier to do than most cars. My rig can't use the gallon oil jugs easily - so have to buy the individual quarts.

Since the V-10 uses 7 quarts I buy 1 five quart jug and two singles. Use the singles first and refill from the jug. Love the Fomoto valve, great little gadget!

What type of Fomoto valve would fit the F53 chassis engine?

6.8 V10 Oil Change

Saw that 7 quarts was mentioned. Ford owner's manual says 6 with oil filter and I have only used 6. Shows full at the stick.

F106n. This is for current year models. I know your mh is older. Go to their website and search for your specific year.

According to my manual my coach takes 7 quarts. Here is a picture of my Fomoto valve before I installed it. The black plastic piece is an optional safety clip to keep the valve closed.

That Fomoto valve looks like what I have. It certainly is worth having.

As someone mentioned the oil fill is mounted very high and impossible to dump a 5 quart jug of oil into or really even use a funnel. I refilled a quart oil bottle and just kept filling with that. Will probably just buy 7 individual quarts next time.

Wondering if some years of the V-10 required 6 quarts and some 7 quarts? Maybe newer ones take more.

The version of the V10 that is in our E350-450 chassis is a slightly lower horsepower rating than what is in the F53 chassis.

The lower hp motor is 6 quarts the higher 7 quarts.

Thanks. They recommend the same valve for my unit.

Except that some 6.8L engines call for 5w-30, mine included. Be sure to order the right stuff.

I doubt seriously that the engine would know the difference between 20w & 30w, but use whatever yours recommends. If you live in very warm areas the 30w would be better & in cooler areas the 20w.

That is exactly what Ford told me. My oil cap says 5w-20 but the owners book says 5w-30. SO I called Ford and they said what you said. SO for me its 5x-30

My 2015 book calls for 5w20. Be nice if Ford would make up their mind. I'd think 5w30 would perform better in really hot weather. BTW, after 5000 miles, the oil on the dipstick still looks clean. I am impressed by full synthetic.

The oil fill cap on my 2017 E450 V10 says 5w-30 as does my owners manual. My Ford service writer didn't seem to believe me when I mentioned it because it's "always been 5w-20". It seems Ford has changed it for some reason. I also expect it wouldn't make any difference in most cases but might as well follow the recommendations

When Ford introduced the V-10 they were concerned about oiling issues so they had an agreement with Pennzoil and so 5w 20 was born and became the standard in the V-10. I could hardly find it when I had my first V-10 17 years ago.

As for the cost, my local Ford Fleet Service does my oil change for $72 so it isn't worth the effort for me to do it. I drop it off, they shuttle me to work, they pick me up, I go home!
