Vegas/Axis 24.1 battery replacement

Our 2015 Vegas 24.1 came with two 12V Interstate marine batteries. We have been advised that two deep cycle 6V batteries (in series) would be a better option but we're concerned about size. Most GC batteries are 10.875" tall. We have 11" available under the step. Has anyone been successful putting a GC battery into that space?

Use the SEARCH function.
- IIRC...one Axis/Vegas owner modified/raised their step 3/4” to accommodate the extra height for two taller batteries

- Others have created a battery compartment in those front or side storage lockers to house two additional batteries, four total

- Still others using AGM or Lithium “sealed batteries” have utilized the under kitchen sink cupboard (where the location is next to the OEM battery compartment)

- Finally, there was a Class C owner who modified the under steps area to add enough space for four group 27s. He welded & bolted steel to create a platform behind the OEM location on E350/450 units

I looked at GC batteries for my new Axis 24.1 and concluded that they were too high. I ended up replacing the original G24 or 27s with a pair of G31 AGMs from WindyNation about $190 ea on Amazon. They fit perfectly.

You might squeeze two GC batteries in but the problem you will have, given the tight height spec, is room for the interconnecting cables. Attached is a pic of mine with the new G31 batteries in place.

I stored the G24/27s in the adjacent compartment and may use them for extended dry camping trips by connecting them with a jumper to the main batteries. That will give me a total nominal capacity of about 350 Ahs.
