Water heat stopped and won't re-light

My water heater was working and then stopped, when I turn on the switchagain, nothing happens. No spark. I manually lit the water heater with a lighter after turning on but it goes off about 5 seconds. So, i am guessing the igniter doesn't work and the probe checking if there is a flame doesn't work. Do I replace the igniter?

Model G6A-8E

Year/Make/Model RV OR water heater model #?

Could be the control board - common OEM failure item for Atwood water heaters.

Do they still have thermo-couplers?

Have to ask... is your house battery charged and in good condition? The controller needs 12volts to function properly. Same for the ignitor.

No thermocouple... there's no pilot light with electronic ignition.

My controller says battery fully charged, I have electric connected to motorhome. Makes sense no pilot light. Inside on the controller with the switch to turn on water heater, there us a red light that goes on when "pilot light off" so that wording us probably not correct.

Sounds like control board problem. I'd do some research on troubleshooting the water heater/control board and associated circuits before shooting the parts cannon at it. It could be something as simple as a loose wire. OR it could be the board.

True dat.

It's a holdover from the "pilot light" days. Now it's just an indication of failure to light.

If you need to replace the control board I highly recommend you go with the Dinosaur brand replacement:

Here's a great troubleshooting video from Lou at RV Habit...

Even though he calls it a "wooter" heater, don't hold that against him...

But this video IS very thorough in troubleshooting your problem!

So I lit the water heater with a lighter, it stays on for a few seconds. How does the controller know it didn't light eventhough it was lit manually?

The ignitor (sparky thingy) is also the flame sensor. The heat creates a static voltage that the control board can measure. Same with the furnace.

I ordered a controller board and a "sparky thing", I'll try the sparky thing first then the controller board. They arrive in a few days. I bypassed the thermistor, but still didn't light. So it wasn't that. Don't have a meter with me to check continuity. Does anyone know the wires that supplies 12V to the controller?

It's too late now but before ordering an expensive new control board, there is a cheap "heat fuse" located on the unit. If it overheats, a part of the fuse melts and breaks conductivity. That would cause the exact behavior you describe. The fuses come five to a pack for about $3.

Is this the one between the brown wire and the water heater? I removed it and connected the wire directly to the water heater. Didn't fix it. A new controller board fixed it.

I first replaced the igniter (sparky thing) since it only cost about $12, when that didn't fix it, replaced controller which fixed it.
