Water heater flame out

I boondocked at a cracker barrel then drove 100 miles the next day, when i arrived i see signs of flame a good three feet above the outside water heater vent,no melting and no paint damage but definite signs of black soot way above vent.is it because i accidently left the propane water heater on while traveling or do i have a more severe problem,i wont use the propane heater again till after this trip just in case.

We had an issue a few years ago. I used to leave the propane on while driving. We had a tire blow and it took our our propane lines which were routed through the wheel well. Since then I shut off the propane every time we drive.

You have a major issue with that water heater. Get someone who knows what to look for and get it inspected. Or replace the unit. You should not have that type of heat stress out of that vent.

Is it just soot & will wipe right off or is it permanently imbedded in your finish ? If just soot , there is a air/fuel mixture issue & may be just need servicing to clean burner up or malfunctioning Gas Valve. If there is flame coming out of there , you got real issues & would not use it till its repaired or replaced .

Turn off the furnace and water heater while on the move. Same effect as blowing on a campfire. You're lucky it didn't leave you with a charred chassis in the emergency lane. It's the number one reason they burn to the frame on the highways. Lots of opinions and many will fight for theirs but you see it with your own eyes...on your own motorhome. Call it "a word to the wise" experience.

I don't think that happen while driving

Looks like you do have an issue with fuel/air mix or you Propane was running low until it went out.
But given the fact that the marks are straight up, this didn't happen while driving.
