2020 Jeep Wrangler

Hi All

I have a 2016 Freedom Elite 28H. Replaced my Jeep Cherokee that weighs 4000 lbs with a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that weighs 5300 lbs. I don't have the base plate on yet.

Does anybody have any experience towing a Wrangler behind the 28H. It looks like the MH is 14000 and gross weight is 22000 which should leave 8000 lbs for towing. It is on a E450 frame.

Thanks

What is your hitch rated at? 2016 was during the time when some manufacturers were still installing 5000 pound hitches on smaller class c and class a motorhomes and before they started installing the 7500 or 8000 pound hitches as standard.

You do not want to tow a 5300 pound vehicle on a 5000 pound hitch.

Hey Rich -

Believe you've quoted the gross weight of the Wrangler. Before I bought ours I checked and the curb weight is around 4200. From the Jeep specs online:

Weights
SpecificationDimension
Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) (lbs.)
5,300

Payload (lbs.)
1,233

Good call. I always assumed it was 8000 since I bought it. Went out looked at the hitch. It said 8000 gross trailer weight 500 tongue weight. Now I know for sure.

Thanks

You are correct MRICHARD. The gross weight is 5300. The curb weight with front and back axles are around 4200. That makes me feel even better for towing.

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, we haven't had the chance to take it out. However, we were towing a Nissan Xterra, which weighs virtually the same, and that went well. So I'm assuming (always dangerous, right?) that it will be similar.

Using a Demco baseplate and towbar, with an Invisibrake system. I've installed all of it and we're ready to go. Hopefully we'll do a trip soon...

Have you had any problems getting it out of neutral to 4H or 2H after flat towing.

Rock it a little, if it's new it's harder, the more it's used the easier, I keep a wheel wedge so it won't roll to far, first time was hard, even for the dealer, owners manual helps.

Yes, I agree. I bought a 2011 2 door Wrangler last year and it tows very well. Don’t even know it’s there. Took it through the mountains to Utah and Idaho with no problems.

We have a 2019 Freedom elite 24he on a E350 chassie... towing a 2019 wrangler ... I use a currie baseplate, blue ox 10.000lb bar and a patriot breaking system with wireless controlled lights... It tows very well... The transfer case shift was a bit stiff at first but it's better now after about 3000mi of towing... I find if I start it and put the tranny it in neutral first the transfer case let's go a bit easier... Have fun with it...
