Car dolly

This board has been a wealth of knowledge, so I thought I would ask one more questions. For several years now we have towed travel trailers into the mountains of Colorado. This will be the first year we drove our 2017 Chateau. We are looking at used car dollys because we don't have a vehicle we can tow four-flat. I would guess a car dolly with electric brakes would be a necessity driving over the continental divide. What say you?

First, your vehicle needs to be front wheel drive. I've had both electric and surge, both work great! I prefer surge because of the simplicity and it doesn't need a brake controller or backup battery. Just my opinion, I'm sure others may have different ones and that's ok.

We have a Dolly with surge brakes, haven't had an issue so far with any hills/mountains/etc. Haven't pulled over/near/etc. the "big" mountains out West though. Have pulled through the PA and VA "hills" without issue though.

Thanks for the reply SuperD. Yes, we have a front wheel drive Ford Taurus which is why we would go this direction compared to four-flat.

Check Craigslist, there are usually some good used dollies for sale there, if not in your area expand the search.

Not necessary front wheel drive cars only. Both of my Corvairs (rear engine rear wheel drive with 4-sp trans) tow well on my Master Tow dolly. Corvairs with PowerGlide can also be towed on a dolly as the Corvair PowerGlide has a rear oil pump driven by the rear wheels so it is lubricated when towing

Just got back from Colorado, new Mexico and the car and dolly were great. I have the Acme tow dolly with surge brakes. Takes about 10 minutes to load.

We use Acme with surge. We pull a 2007 PT, the poor car gets to carry the spares, all the tools to change a tire, air compressor, wife's electric scooter. I don't think that I'm at 10 minutes but under 15.
