Hi DocMike
We are looking at the exact same toad. What are you using for towing? How about braking?
Looking forward to meeting you on the road!

Bolandd,
Have not yet made the decision. The more I study the options the more questions I have on the various tow setups (Blue OX is one I keep seeing).
Did you see the posting this Forum (different thread) that showed the Reese Hitch tearing away the under chassis where it was mounted? I have a good mechanic friend that I am going to show that to then get him to evaluate my current set up before I even tow the first time.
Right now I have a Curt Hitch mount with my sparetire on it.
Never know who you will run into on the road, one row over and two sites to the left is another Vegas in the "TAPS RV Park" here in Asheville. Nice gentleman, 2015 Vegas and had his windshield replaced due to stress crack by a company in Charlotte NC (35 miles from our home). I plan to get the name and address and post the repair shop on this Forum, seems they know how to fix the windshield so it stays fixed.
I'll post pictures once we get the Soul transformed to a "TOAD".

We have two tow options:
For short trips- it's a Manx dune buggy. Lightweight, simple to tow($75 VW tow bar and no brakes needed)
For longer trips where we need reliability and a roof- 2016 Subaru Forester. 6 speed standard transmission, blue ox tow set up. Much more expensive to set up the tow bar- brake buddy needed. But doesn't break down like the buggy did in the Grand Tetons with no VW repair place for hundreds of miles!

Doc,
I'm just down the road in Hendersonville...but never heard of that RV park until now. Thanks... of course, locally, might check Lake Powhatan(E/W/S), N. Mills River(Dry), or Davidson River(E/W).

Bill,
We are working our way West on I-40 looking at RV Parks. We might just hang a left and head south on I-26 to Hendersonville (always a lot of people heading South off of I-40 at that intersection). As I remember there is a nice Legion Post there. Will check out the Parks you noted.
BTW: Bill, the owner of TAPS is a Veteran, he gives a Military Discount, they are right next to The American Legion Post 526 Veterans Center. If you have to go to the VA might be a nice place to base out of.

Been looking at the 2016 models and looks like our choice is...either the 2005 Grand Cherokee or the 2008 Ram we currently own.
Choices are sure slim in the 2016 line up with 4X4 and auto transmission.
Would really like something under 4600 # but Wranglers are out, kidneys still hurt from the last one we owned

The Manx Dune Buggy sounds like a good tow, does it tow without a dolly and is it legal in all states. A Manx (or something similar would be great), we haven't used a toad yet and it really hasn't been a problem even when we where out 5 weeks, but would be handy.

My Dodge Dakota 4x4 auto truck works well as a toad. It weights
in right at 4K, to disengage the transfer case is just push a button.
Mine has 4 doors is comfortable to drive & ride in, plus I have the
pick up bed with a cover for lockable storage.

The Manx does tow without a dolly. Legal in all states. Light enough that you barely feel it and don't need supplemental brakes. Downsides- not weatherproof and it's an old VW

It took us a year to find something suitable for our toad needs. We didn't want to spend a lot of $$ on a car we may or may not be happy with down the road.
We were fortunate to find a good used SUV that had been owned by the same owner since it was new (2004). It's a Suzuki Grand Vitara 4WD manual, with 106K miles, and a TON of maintenance records. The original owners were almost obsessive about keeping it good order. It also included the base plate for the tow bar, so that saved us some money!
So far we're happy. But we need to take it on a good road trip to give it a thorough workout.

2015 Ford Focus, 5-sp manual. Tows great doesn't even have a steering lock, so I don't even have to leave the key in it.
