Do you really need rock guards while using a tow dolly?

I trusted the factory mud guard behind the duellys and an added brush type guard and still did $1000’s in damage to our toad on a 15 minute gravel road drive. Will never do gravel again without unhooking and driving well behind/in front of our unit. All said I’ve gone with the Protect-A-Tow product, basically a “Spider-Man” type mesh that connects via hooks to the outside corners of both vehicles. It’s elastic, bungee cord type design flexes during turns and remains taunt at all times. No wind resistance with enough give to resist punctures. Best of all it connects/disconnects in a couple of minutes and stores like an umbrella.

I've been flat towing for 9 years last 5 with the Four Winds, have mud flaps, but have never had severe damage, except for maybe a dozen tiny rock hits, which I could even of received from just driving around. My jeep is 4" over so maybe the extra height has really helped.

I’ve towed a Fiat 500 behind our 26 Foot class C Ford E-450 without a guard and haven’t had any damage. Have gone over 8,000 miles with her and no problems. So light you can’t even tell she’s back there. So unless you plan on a lot of gravel road I would get the shocks.

Yes. Most important is to check that the area behind your drive tires are well covered.

That said, heading to Alaska, off road you bet do both.

I pulled a Mazda5 Mini mini van on a dolly behind a 24 foot Minnie Winnie for years and didn’t have rock guards. Never had an issue. Front of car was as high or higher than back of MH. Would def put a shield to flat tow though.

Dealer supplied touch-up paint 0.00. Rock guard 400.00 - 800.00. Damage to date 0.00.

Bottom line: keep money in pocket and have touch-up paint available if needed.

BTW, I get more dings in the sides from parking lots than I have ever gotten from towing flat or with a dolly.

I tow with a EX Tow Dolly, with the rear of the MH angled up I get dings on my PT Cruiser.

We tow a small car using a tow bar setup. Tried towing it without any guard because it had the clear rock guard ( see through tape. Rocks beat it up pretty bad. So we invested in a think black bra. That was the ticket. We do have the bigger plastic shields, but they are a pain.

Just got a tow master tow dolly for my 2013 Thor Palazzo 33.2 (35ft).
It has a full mudguard that shall remain nameless but has been pretty inifectual since I acquired the unit from the PO. Loaded up the Jetta and headed out for a 200 mile run. got to my destination (had to drive thru the rain). the front end and wiper area were full of grit just from the Highway. When I went home they were chip sealing 1 section of the highway, so had to go pretty slow. when I got home the front of the jetta was loaded with rocks, mostly small but 1 had to be 1.5" diameter that i had a heck of a time getting out from the wiper area. I will try my rock guard off my pickup next trip and see if that makes a difference.

I have towed a Scion XB manual transmission rigged for towin for a few years using a Blue Max system. No protection. Sure there are several chips on the hood but the car has over 200,000 miles on it so WHO CARES?
