In California 55 is the max towing speed. This includes all trucks. Ha, Ha, Ha. I follow the trucks. 65 to 70 mph. If they are going 55, it is because CHP aircraft or cars have been spotted.

OK update last week drove my Chateau 28Z, with my baby ford flat towed, for about 8 total hours. The ranger is 2WD manual and I kept it around 65mph most of the way. In my opinion flat towing is an absolute dream solution to getting a vehicle with you when on the road. I had a tow dolly.... no thanks to that and happy it is gone.
By the way ford recommends 55mp max with unlimited distance. After towing Ranger is just fine.

Realize that the manufacturer imposed speed limit is based on worst case scenarios both in ambient temperature and speedometer errors. As long as you aren't pulling through the desert at 130 degrees with a speedometer reading 10 mph low you probably won't have any issues.

My Sonic is limited to 65 MPH but I frequently exceed that for short periods up to 75 MPH and for extended periods by one or two MPH with no ill effects over 20K+ towed miles in addition to my driven 100K+ miles on the odometer.
