I made a drop that used a second receiver that came into the stock receiver from the back with side plates. Worked fine, just setting the garage now as we have a different rig that the height is fine. Towing a 2018 JLU. I’m in Michigan.

It's a Jeep: Drive it up on top of your rig, and tie it down there...
Just watch out for "low" (under 30 feet!) overpasses....

There IS a precedent

That is a terrific idea, coming in from the back? Don’t know why the big manufacturers don’t do it this way to keep the whole thing more compact.

3.5” Lift on JK Wrangler

I tow my 07 JK with a Rock Krawler 3.5” lift and 37” tires. I use a 10” drop hitch receiver (not a drop hitch) flipped up. I use that with a Blue Ox towbar. I attach the towbar to my Jeep’s Smittybilt XRC front bumper’s D-Ring lugs with adapters from Blue Ox that are made for this purpose. The Jeep end of the towbar is still 2” higher than the drop hitch receiver when all connected.

You will need to measure the height of the receiver and compare that to the height of the point on the Jeep where the towbar connects. Based on the math is how you will determine what size drop hitch receiver to get that will keep the towbar as level as possible. Should be less than 3” difference.

You know...a smart guy would have probably taken a picture of the setup. All I can provide right now are the links in my previous reply and maybe a picture if the Jeep bumper. I found these pics online, which are nearly identical to my setup.

Here’s a better pic showing the drop hitch receiver. This one is only about a 4-5” drop (up) receiver. Since my Jeep is quite a bit taller, mine is 10”.

The braking system I use is the Blue Ox Autostop. It’s a surge braking system mounted to the front of the towbar. Uses the weight of the Jeep when slowing down to actuate the Autostop and pull the Jeep’s brake pedal via a cable running from the Autostop to the pedal.

https://www.blueox.com/wp-content/up.../01/BX8893.pdf

I don’t think Blue Ox makes it anymore, but it works good. The most popular surge brake towbar is the ReadyBrute. Same concept as mine, but is more popular and reliable.

I paid about $800 two years ago for the Blue Ox Auto stop, which included the towbar. That saved me about $700-800 since I didn’t have to purchase those overpriced braking systems for over $1k that sit on the floor in front of the toad’s driver seat.

You’ll need to shop around for the Ready Brute for pricing. It was about $1,100 two years ago. Still cheaper than a towbar plus the other systems.

For brake lights I used the Mopar Tow Vehicle Wiring Harness - 82211156AB, for 2007-2014 Wranglers. Found it on amazon. It’s plug and play made by Mopar for this reason. It makes the brake lights illuminate on the Jeep when the RV brake pedal is pressed. No splicing of wires required, but is a pain to get to the plugs behind the glove box.
