Are tow dollies legal in all states? We were told some states have outlawed them, and also the jeep rubicon we tow has to be flat towed or trailer

Your response to both of these questions should be: Where is it written?

Somebody tells you the tow dolly is illegal in some States you should ask; "which States and where is that written?"

Any question about how to tow a modern vehicle is ALWAYS answered in the Owners Manual. In the case of your Jeep it can be towed 4 flat or on a trailer but not on a dolly.

Tow dollies are legal in all of the states. Some states have different requirements for residents with tow dollies(some require them to have a license plate/registration/brake lights). The state of California does not require them to be registered or have a license plate for residents. Some do require brake lights on the towed vehicle. I just added magnetic mount brake lights with a long lead wire connection for safety when towing our car.

When researching laws etc related to tow follies info about the follies used for tow trucks gets inter-mingled and the laws for the two are quite different. It wouldn’t surprise me if some states were trying to restrict the use of tow truck follies to push them over to rollback trucks.

Just a thought.

But the dang thing fits! It's a bit tighter than I care for; but it's a workable situation.
There are a lot of things to like about this solution:
  1. The trailer is aluminum, so it weighs minimal.
  2. Only two wheels are touching the ground, so only two tires are wearing.
  3. 2 trailer tires will cost less than 4 car tires.
  4. Can be backed up easily.
  5. The trailer has no sides, so the car doors can be opened and closed.
  6. No brakes or lights need to be added to the car.
  7. No drive shaft to disconnect.
  8. No steering adapter to attach/detach.
  9. Easy on, easy off. Probably 5 minutes max.

Now my questions:
  1. What holds the car onto the trailer?
  2. Is a Spark really 12 feet long?
  3. Why does the trailer have a triangular cage in the front?
  4. What kind of brakes does the trailer have?
  5. What is the GVW of the car/trailer combo?
  6. What is the make and model of that trailer?
  7. Where can I get one?

The Spark is 11' 11"
Electric brakes on the trailer.
The front of it is triangulated.
The storage box is used for anything we can't fit in the RV
It's an Aluma UTR-12.
The trailer's GVW is 2955 pounds. Probably a licensing thing.
With the car weighing 2100: we're at the max for it.
Where can you buy one? Let the Internet find you that answer...

Tow dollies are legal in all states. Depending on what states you plan to use the dolly in, it may also be required to have brakes (the state you live in doesn't matter - brake restrictions are state-specific and apply to trailers and towed vehicles visiting from other states regardless of the laws of those other states). Here's a nice summary:
https://towbetterdolly.com/trailer-brakes/
Or just keep life simple and get one with brakes. The Rubicon is quite heavy anyway.

Registration/title requirements also vary by state. (Ohio doesn't require either one, however if towing a vehicle using a dolly, the vehicle is required to have valid registration and plates.)

If towing the dolly without a vehicle, then the dolly is required to have brake and signal lights. If towing a vehicle using a dolly, the vehicle is required to have working tail lights, but the dolly is not. Working dolly lights are not sufficient if there is a vehicle on the dolly.

Nice!

I've been looking for a trailer to fit my 2016 Civic Touring. It is 19" longer, 8" wider, and 677 pounds heavier that your Spark. To make the search more difficult, I would prefer surge disc brakes. That trailer probably doesn't exist. But, even if I find one, it will probably have two axles.

Maybe I should be looking for a South Korean fake Chevy like yours?

now might be the time to look at Chevy again

Bob:

I've owned many Chevys and Pontiacs over the past 48 years, but in 2012 I finally gave up on my Buy American policy and swore I'd never buy another Chevy after my 2002 trailblazer self-destructed. But, as somebody here pointed out, the Spark is actually a South Korean built vehicle, much closer to a Daewoo, Opel, Hyundai, or Kia than to a GM product.

I spent a couple of hours yesterday researching the 2022 Chevy Spark and there is a lot to like.

Can I ask you a few questions about your purchase?
  1. Why did you choose the Chevy Spark?
  2. It comes in 8 trim levels. Which did you choose and why?
  3. Were you able to find the model and color you wanted on a lot somewhere, or did you have to order it?
  4. Was the dealer willing to negotiate or did you have to pay MSRP?

Not sure if you were asking any “Bob” on this thread, but…
1) cheap initial cost and very light weight at 2200#
2) Activ, I wanted all the options & 5 speed manual
3) found a ‘20 in June ‘20. White, which was acceptable over dark colors
4) I was extremely lucky, but had to drive 300 miles to buy it because no one else had what I wanted
Sticker was $16,997. The reduced price was $13,888 + tax and lic. It was reduced way lower than 2LT at all dealers I researched. But even 2LT did not have manual tranny.
There was no negotiation.

Great Korean car. Drives just like a Hyundai or Kia.
A little underpowered with 95hp
But I’ve averaged 500 road miles per month and currently 37.7 MPG on the Speedo

I bought my Spark in July of this year. I specifically wanted the most basic trim level (LS) with a manual transmission for flat towing and because it’s fun to shift by myself. It is a”second car” for us and only gets driven about 5-6,000 miles a year. It gets towed almost as much as it gets driven. I bought at the peak of used car prices (sigh) and paid $12,500 for a 2017 with 29,000 miles. New ones sticker for only $1500 more but I could not locate one within 1000 miles of home and 2 dealers each said it would be 6 months to order one. Its ridiculously close to sticker for a nearly 5 year old car but it’s still a pretty low price for a fun, reliable easily towed car so I’m happy. It’s a fine little car, surprisingly comfortable for two and reasonably roomy with the back seats folded. Super easy to hook up and tows better than my Wrangler did.

I wanted light, short & cheap
I wanted a Base LS with an automatic
I got it from Carvana. It is a 2021 model... with just 241 miles on it!
My guess: some "horrible" parents bought it for their baby girl, and she said, "°There's no effing way that I'm driving that cheap P.O.S.! "

My RV is a Chevy, although it was actually made by Navistar under contract. So far, I've been very happy and seems quite solid. I'm seriously considering getting a Chevy for my next primary driver too, and I'm generally a Honda/Toyota guy, but those companies have fallen way behind on BEVs. Last GM product I had was a '94 Saturn SC2. Loved that car, but they pretty much destroyed Saturn starting in '95, and people noticed.

Anyway... I'm seriously considering getting a Bolt EUV in a year or so, after Chevy and LG have worked out the battery issues.

I'm gonna need some good advice...

Best advice that I can give you is.....

As the Smart is no longer of use to you AND you have the Spark as a toad,

You could always bring the Smart up to Canada for me to use as a toad, no stupid tests to fail in Alberta.

I'll even buy you a coffee............:whist ling:

I already own a great little 2016 Civic Touring with amazing turbo power.

So, I'm left with these choices:
1. Get a dolly, but then I can't back up anymore.
2. Get a trailer for the Civic, but it would have to be over 16 feet long and really heavy, probably with tandem axels.
3. Get a manual Spark and a tow bar, but I really hate manuals.
4. Get an automatic Spark and a trailer like Denman's, but even an aluminum trailer adds a lot of weight.
5. Just keep towing my golf cart around on a utility trailer.

Right now, I'm leaning toward #4 or #5.

Somebody, please, "steer" me in the right direction.
