Liscence Plate for toad question
remember I'm from Europe!
Lets say the toad breaks down while on the road far away from your home state. And it is irreversable.
1. How do you wreck it outside your state
2 How do you get a newcar liscenced while far away from your state? Will it be registered in another state then?
Thanks for your answers

In the US you get a temporary plate when you buy a vehicle that would leave you at least a couple weeks to get to your home state to register (and pay sales tax on it in Michigan).

to register the car in the state you choose you will have to go to that state. Some require an safety inspection done and then some sitting around in the motor vehicle department.
As far as wrecking your car, the state doesn't matter as much. So, did your toad die and you are looking for a new car?

It's not an insurmountable situation; but gathering up the right paperwork might cause a few tense moments...
Let's hope that nobody has to find out!

For long trips with a toad, I recommend taking the title with you. That way if your toad is beyond economical repair you can sign the title over to whomever and go on your happy way.

You should have proof of registration / ownership, and insurance in the vehicle. Donate it to charity and tell them you will send the title when you can have it mailed to them from wherever it may be.
If you find something to buy new, I promise you they will help you with your temporary papers.
My question is if you are on the road in RV and lose your toad, is the new toad that important that you can't wait to get back home? Unless you buy exact same kind of car you have to purchase all of that towing equipment all over again?

Toad
Yeah, we will be spending the next couple of years in the states and this question is one of our before we go questions since things might be different in Europe.
So taking along the title might help, I understand, but have to hide it properly. Or the mailing thing if I have a friend willing to mail Titles to me.
Thinking Murphy I would say if it happens it happens while in Alaska with the Home beeing in Florida .
So I could register it as well in the state I buy it in? That would open other options like buying a quad for the stay in Alaska eg and sell it after moving on. Or a Motorcycle somewhere else.

In that case of preplanning.
1. Keep registration and proof of insurance in Toad
2. Keep toad title in RV locked or secure if ever needed
3. If you need to purchase a new toad, buy from a legit dealer, they should properly register the title for you in your home state. You should have proof of payment of tax title and license. They will likely charge a doc fee of $150 or so to do this and give you temp tag. Your license plate will come from your home state Florida. Don't know if you have license plate shipped to alternate address than what is on title? But since you planning. Have some planned to pick up your mail to send to a temp address i.e. the dealer you bought toad from.

Regarding securing important papers (titles to vehicles, valuables etc) while traveling...we have a small safe in our motorhome for such things.

Just a thought..
You are used to Europe's idiosyncrasies.. ie; You are traveling from Country to Country.( England/France/Italy whatever...) So you must deal with each foreign country you travel thru.
Here in the states, the states work together...All are just a segment of the USA.. (similar to each county/province of your home Country )
If You need to replace a vehicle away from your American "home base" state, it should not be that difficult, any reputable vehicle dealer can walk you thru the minimal "hoops" you will have to jump thru.. including any licensing or financing if needed..
And Most of all .. Welcome to America !!
