Getting the speedo cable unscrewed is definitely going to keep the odometer quiet...
... but it's a pain to get to it!
You could duct tape over the opening; once you get it loose...

It's a 2WD Explorer so no transfer case and the Ford procedure for Recreational Towing has then leave the key in the ACC position.

My 83 Porsche 911 is my TOAD. It is a 5 speed manual shift. None of the manuals show anything that would answer my question. So in this case RTFM has failed me. Checked the manuals on my other 2 vehicles and also no info.
A Porsche 911. I have never seen one of those flat towed, dollied, or trailered in 40 years. It’s a mid engine rwd vehicle. I would check with a Porsche dealer to ask if it can even be flat towed or dolly towed. You’d be fine on a trailer. Sorry we’re no more help than this.

Heck, didn't even know it was flat towable without dropping the drive shaft

I picked a toad based on many of the challenges that most RV’ers face; a towable vehicle is first and foremost, followed by all the other challenges like ignition on/off, register miles while towing or not, steering wheel locked or not, toad weight, and so on. I finally started looking for my toad with the criteria in mind. Finally selected a used Fiat 500C. The towing process is simple. Hook up tow bar and cables, plug in lights, put car in neutral and release brake. The toad doesn’t register miles while being towed, I don’t have to turn the ignition key on, the steering wheel does not lock with the ignition off, and this thing weighs 2350 pounds. I don’t even know it’s back there unless I turn the RV camera on. At that low of weight, I don’t need an auxiliary braking system either. By the way, it’s also a convertible. Does it look like a piece of crap? Yes, it does although many kids and the ladies and say say it looks cute. But I’m too old at this point to have an ego that it would bother me driving this little thing. Matter of fact, I rather enjoy it, and I can park it almost any place. By the way, did I mention that it gets 36 to 40 MPG. I considered the mini Cooper prior to buying the Fiat. I just felt like the Mini was heavy enough I’d have to put the auxiliary braking system in, so I turned that idea off. Would I rather be driving a Porsche 911? Sure, but not practical for me. I am happy with my choice of the Fiat.

Good choice Bob, good choice. That correlates a little to your slogan of “don’t let others steal your dreams.” If it’s cute to you, that’s all that matters.

You should attend more Porsche Club of America events. The 911 is a rear engine vehicle with the engine behind the rear wheels. Only the current 911 race only cars are mid engine. All the current Porsche 911 street cars are rear engine. The Porsche 718 (Boxster and Cayman) is a mid engine design.

But what song does that line come from?

Bob, Those lyrics are from the song “Heaven and Hell”, by Black Sabbath. Regardless, that is a great phrase to remember.

Thanks for the info. Back in the 70’s and early 80’s when I was with BFG saw a lot of 914’s at SCCA events. Had never really been around the 911 much.

Yes! We’ve towed a 2012 Mini Cooper 4 down for about 5 years.

I’m just curious, for my own knowledge NORRIRN, in case I wear my Fiat out and need to replace it; do you have to run with the ignition on to unlock the steering wheel, and secondly, does the odometer register miles while being towed? In so much as they are mostly under 3000 lbs, did you hook up an auxiliary brake system? I like the little mini’s. They would also be an easy car to park.

The Mini’s steering wheel does not lock so no need to leave ignition on. However, all electric shuts off 30 minutes after the puck (key) is removed so, in order to power the Patriot brake, I installed a separate 12v receptacle and wired it straight to the battery. So yes, I use an auxiliary brake system. Miles towed don’t register on the odometer.

The Mini is indeed a fun little car to drive especially in places like SD’s Black Hills. Also very easy to park. In top gear, it will cruise easily at 85 when on rural interstates out west. Like someone posted previously, if we go off road, it’s by accident.
