Pros and Cons of flat towing

What are the pros and cons of flat towing? Specifically with 4 wheel drive vehicles. Also what do you tow.

This has been thoroughly discussed on this and probably every other RV forum. Your decision will rely on a bunch of factors, unique to you. Your results will vary...

We flat tow because:
We keep our cars for a long time
I don't mind having the front of my car slightly defaced
The upfront expense wasn't prohibitive for me
I detest getting down on the ground to strap a car to a dolly
I never worry about tie down straps working loose
I can connect uphill, downhill or even in the rain
I don't have to move or store the dolly at campground or home

Gonna go grumpy old man and ask that you just search the forum for god knows how many threads that already cover this issue.

I wouldn’t use a dolly if you gave me one. Make sure you choose a car that is approved by its manufacturer for recreational towing. Many, maybe even most, are not. (And don’t trust the salesman to answer you correctly.) it’s worth paying some attention to the height of the bumper on the car relative to the receiver on your coach. If the difference is huge it can pose some difficulties. But get all of it right and towing is easy and painless. Good luck.

As others have pointed out there is a lot of info on flat towing available for searching. If you have specific questions or concerns please ask.

True 4WD vehicles with a transfer case that can be put in neutral areusually flat towable, but very few are dolly towable.

Most AWD vehicles that can be flat towed are also not dolly towable.

There are resources on the Interweb for help in determining if a particular vehicle can be flat towed, but the final and ultimate word rests with the Owner's Manual, not the dealer, not Joe mechanic, not an Internet forum.

I choose flat towing if I want the F150 on the trip

Otherwise I take the Escape on a Stehl dolly

Takes twice as much time to hook up the dolly
