JL Wrangler Tranfer case Issues
Has anybody have any transfer case issues with a JL Wrangler when preparing for RV Towing. I heard some issues of trying to get to neutral and back to 2H
Thanks

Our '18 JLU is really tough to shift from 2H to 4H and then to N and 4L - so much so that I thought forcing it might break something. But with time it is getting better. Not all that uncommon, from what I've read. We bought ours a few months ago - a dealer loaner, so I doubt it was ever shifted into 4WD.

Hey Mickey
This is Rich with the 2020 Wrangler. I haven't tried it yet. It sounds like the more you do it the better it gets. Is this what you found out. I heard that some people that finished with their towing had a hard time getting out of neutral. You are my expert on the JL Wrangler. If you come up with any other tips pass them on this way.
Thanks

They work just about like ANY Jeep transfer case.
Even the first twin-stick ones.

Far from an expert here! I did own a CJ7 back in the day, but it was light years apart from Jeeps of today. But from what I've learned, the shifting does have to be "exercised" and does get better with time. I have noticed ours doing better.

Our 2018 JLUS transfer case was really hard to shift when new and not moving. Get it rolling slowly (3-5 mph) and it's easy peasy.
It has gotten a bit easier with use, but still sometimes just won't do what I want.
If the ground is sloped in the right (safe) direction, I can let it start rolling and it'll easily shift.

Transfer Case
Yep, we have a 2020 JL and shifting is a bit of a chore. When done towing I was able to get it into 4H but not 2H. Once I moved it a few feet it easily went into 2H. Part of the trade offs of not having all of the electronics for the transfer case but I actually prefer the direct shifting. You'll figure it out. Other than that, we made our first towing trip last weekend and it was a success.

Hope this link comes through. On You Tube Good video on how to get transfer case out of neutral. It showing how to get in 4L but I am sure it works to get in 4H. It probably works better than trying to rock the Jeep back and forward.

That video is good but the guy said he is in a JK model. I know there are some distinct differences between the JK and the JL as far as the automatic transmission so just wondering if the transfer case shifting issues are the same.

My understanding is the transfer case are pretty much the same. It makes sense to get the gears turning when putting it in gear. Same thing as if you were moving. I will probably never use 4L. I am more interested when I start to tow the Jeep getting out of neutral to 4H and then to 2H. My first time towing wont be until October so until then i will be exercising 2H to 4H alot to loosen things up.

Not sure if they changed sonething in the 2020 Wrangler but i read this procedure and it worked to go from 2H to 4H. This was the first time i tried since buying the car. I went straight back with slight pressure to the right and it slipped right into 4H. Used a little muscle but not much. I did it 6 times in a row moving and stationary. All worked with no problem.
I think most people when pulling on the shifter have a tendency to add pressure to the left. I turn my hand around so there is no possible way to have pressure to the left.
Like I said not sure if they changed something in the 2020.

I have a JLUR I offroad often and flattow behind the RV easiest way to get it moving about 3mph shift transmission to neutral then shift transfercase. As I have used mine more I can now get it to shift without rolling but still have to yank a bit. They definitely loosen up with use though.

Rich,
I have had not trouble with my JL shifting to 4 , or back to 2. I think it is one of the best towing options we have right now, if you want a newer model vehicle...plus...they look pretty cool behind your coach.

Jeep JL transfer Case Issue
I've had a similar problem as you. As MRichaud stated, mine has improved some too and and I don't have as much difficulty as I did when the Jeep was new. I usually let it roll backward or forward a little (if possible) and just work with it until the gears align. Hope this helps some Jerry

Yup! No power: just a tiny bit of free rolling...
