My Dad towed a Suzuki Samurai for years.
The odometer on it read over 130,000 miles...

The actual mileage under it's own power: probably less than 50,000.
Somebody ended-up with a GREAT little 4wd!

Must've been older with cable driven speedometer/odometer, most all newer vehicles have electronic speedometer & won't register towed miles unless the key is in the run position..

My car doesn’t add miles to the odometer when I tow.

I picked a 2014 Hundai Elantra manual xmsn. They weigh under 3000 lbs and require no mods to tow. As a bonus, since it is push button start, the steering wheel doesn't lock so the ignition need not be on. I did run a hot accessory plug to power the brake (handy for phone charging at other times, too). I also added a battery maintainer that trickle charges the toad battery when connected to RV. Happy with it....but not the off-loading solution. Doesn't record towed milage on odometer.

For the record: that little Samurai was a 1987, and the speedometer was cable-driven. If the wheels were turning: the odometer got the message...

Lot of great info here (along with some funny stuff).

We have been looking seriously at Grand Cherokees, then today I realized the curb weight of my 2016 F150 King Ranch 4x4 with a 3.6L Eco Boost is the same weight as the Grand Cherokee... what?!

My rig is a 2017 Challenger 37LX. Does anyone have any experience or feedback on the benefits, if any, of towing the Jeep vs the pickup? Any reasons why I shouldn’t just get my truck set up with a Blue Ox and get on the road?

Thanks, Mike

I tow a 2006 Honda Element. It does not register the towing mileage. The engine must be running for it to accrue miles.

Use your truck. Has more room to carry large stuff that won’t fit in Jeep. Fords are better than Jeeps.

Thanks RM. I do love my pickup. I just haven’t seen them mentioned much in conversations about TOADS. But it would be the most cost effective entry for us, since we already have the F150.

Here’s a link to the 2016 Tow Vehicles and it shows a Ford 150 4x4 Automatic towable so save money and keep your truck.

Thank you. I do have that guide. I guess I just assumed it was too heavy, thought I’d read that somewhere but now I realize I was off in left field. Gonna get it set up!

Just have to make sure your hitch weight rating is higher than the weight of your towed vehicle. Mine is 8000 wt rating and I tow 3800 lbs.

Thanks. The Challenger is rated to toe up to 8,000 lbs. Tongue weight is 500, I believe. So my F150 is ok, at just under 5k.

You’re good to tow. I got a blue ox with invisibrake that I tow with. Love it except when I need to refuel if I can find fuel with tanks parallel to road.

I appreciate your help!

Challenger gas tank is in the rear, not quite centered but close enough to reach from either side. F150 has a 37 gallon tank so shouldn’t need to fuel up often when towing and using to get around. I am NOT looking forward to trying to find stations I can get in and out of easily while towing an additional 22 or more feet of TOAD & towbar, but I know it’s all part of RV life.
