Generator question

I have an onan generator. I was boon docking and the generator ran perfect when I ran it by starting it and stopping it. I decided to try the option to have the generator start itself when needed when my batteries get down to 11.5. Overnight I woke up to the smell of gasoline, not exhaust fumes, it was gasoline. I was sleeping so I cannot say what happened first but I do know I heard the generator try to start but didn't and I also heard the generator start itself and run and shut itself off. I am not sure when the gas smell happened. The only thing that I can think of that might have happened is possibly the generator tried to start and flooded? Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? I am afraid to use this auto start now. K.
