Serpentine Belt Had Junk On IT
had the exact same problem, ford mechanic cleaned the belt and it was gone, perfect for the last 20k miles, my noise was at exactly 2000 rpm's not below, not above go figure.

Fed up as well
I am dumping my Quantum 25RC, the quality is so bad it pains me to list the troubles, best thing is to move on to something with a quality build, the search begins.

Solenoid
the switch is controls the solenoid, regardless whether or not it has and led light the control is actually the solenoid which if malfunctioning makes the switch moot.
