There is an advantage to having more available capacity at 12v... Whether that is accomplished with 12v batteries in parallel (add capacities) or 6v batteries in series (add voltages) or some parallel/series arrangement of other battery technology is up to you...
The physical size and number needed can be a deciding factor - and our course the size of your wallet.
You will get different answers on which is 'better'...
