I don't know if this is your fireplace issue also, but ours will heat properly if the furnace is not running. If the furnace is running it stops heating pretty quick because the cold air intake and thermostat for the fireplace is inside the same cabinet as the furnace. It heats up pretty quickly in there and trips the thermostat.
