Have 2016 Axis and was having same trouble with door sliding back and forth during driving and not latching properly. After reading these posts took good look at where spring loaded pin goes up into plastic plate with holes and saw that an open ended wrench could be used to turn pin upwards so that it engaged fully in plate.
