I have always used a caulk gun, even when I was an RV tech. The only time we ever used a can was when we replaced an entire rubber roof. We applied from the can for all wide edges (underneath front and rear edges) and then used a caulk gun on the top under the cap molding and on all screws.

Much easier to work with the gun.

Just my $0.02
