Have you looked at the gas cylinder (strut) that should be mounted to the door. If that cylinder is weak it may be the cause of your issues. A stronger cylinder may prevent the door from slamming into the awning arms. There is however a downside to the stronger cylinder. It may cause the door to open slower, however, with that comes making the door a little harder to close.

Those gas struts function the same as the ones used on the lift gates and trunks of cars and SUVs. You may even be able to find one that is adjustable in opening and closing force. You might was to consider removing the strut and checking a couple of auto parts stores. They should be able to match up a replacement.
