Get the 4 inch wide Eternabond tape and plan to spend the time to do it right. Removing all old sealants isn't going to happen easily so if you decide to sand, scrape and it off consider what damage you may do. Also before you apply the EB tape, use the Eternabond cleaner to clean the surface before taping. This stuff is amazing and easy to work with. It has a broad range for application temperatures; I prefer a cooler day, it reduces the tape stickiness and is easier to handle. The four inch wide recommendation comes from wanting to cover the materials join from the original manufacturer and the various sealants used by others. It leaves a nice finished seam.
