We just returned from 5000 miles cross country. The first day we did 500 miles, and never did that much again. We agreed on 300 miles a day as a limit. We figured out that we needed a break every 2 hours. We often used the break to do our sight seeing. I think it depends on your goals, age, time limit, etc.
