If it’s a tank type, make sure it’s full of water before you turn the heat on. Otherwise you can Ben out the heating element.

Then once you know there is water in the WH there should be a switch on the power panel to turn it on and off. I have a Freedom Elite and it as 2 switches, one for elec and one for gas.
