For RV use, a plug-in hybrid electric drive makes a lot more sense to me for the time being. A system similar to the new Transit to be introduced in Europe would make a much more affordable and functional motorhome. It could be easily scaled in size to match RV requirements.
For motorhomes in the E-450 size range (14,500 GVWR) a 2-liter engine driving a generator is about all that would be needed to extend range indefinitely. The batteries could then power the “house” while camping if off the grid, and if they get low, the generator would only need to run 30~60 minutes per day even if boondocking.
I’ve been expecting a clever company to integrate a plug-in chassis with RV electrical needs for a very long time. It would not surprise me if it happens commercially (mass produced) in next five years or so; starting with smaller rigs.
