The arms are bent and the air pistons are not fully extended when the awning is fully deployed. This is necessary to allow a smooth retraction and proper tension on the patio awning. The end of the extended awning has a 8" flap that should unfurl when the awning is fully deployed. If it has been rolled up for a month or more the flap may be stuck to the top of the awning. C of C maintains an excellent website. You can download the entire owners manual.
