It looks like the same type most of us have these days. It provides the ignition at startup and monitors to be sure the flame is lit or it will shut off the Gas.
There is a reset switch in the heater compartment that can be pushed in order to get the the unit to try again to light. Or you can remove power which will clear the condition as well and then turn it back on.
If you have leaking connections turn the Gas off and have it seen by a qualified person.
