A Jeep 4x4 has an "extra transmission" called a transfer case. The transfer case is behind the transmission and is used to switch in and out of 4x4 mode. Typically a transfer case has its own neutral setting. Thus you can leave the transmission in park and place the transfer case in neutral for towing.
