I had 30 Amp service and 4,000-watt generator. To avoid the start-up current surge you describe while on generator, I normally started the air conditioner first and then set the temperature very low so that compressor would stay on without cycling on and off. After we got done with microwave, hair dryer, etc. I would then adjust thermostat. It just took a little planning and our motorhome never got too cold.
