There's your clue...that light (as you know) should only come on for a second or two and hardly at all if the weather is reasonable warm. If it stays on, it's telling you pre-ignition is not hot enough yet...a result of not enough juice in the batteries. Sounds like it's a battery related issue. As advised, let generator run a while or see if someone around you has a vehicle with enough battery power to jump you. As it's now early morning, you've probably already done this.
