Safety goggles and gloves. Cover terminals that you aren't working on with thick tape so in case you a wrench slips, you won't short across posts.
Had a battery explode in my face as a kid when I was working on my brothers truck and diagnosing a misfire. Used insulated plug wire pullers and a rubber fender cover, but when a bad boot sparked through all of that to the fender next to the battery the spark ignited the gases and I was sprayed with battery acid. Fortunately the shock made my eyes close so the only casualties were my clothes and the battery.
That experience is always on my mind when working with lead acid batteries!
