That system is called an "Automatic Energy Select Switch" (
datasheet). My Axis has one connected between the Microwave and the 120V heater on the water heater--when you use the microwave the water heater is cut out. (Although I would bet with the A/C system it may be more involved so that the compressor isn't simply cut off at a moments notice.)
