Elements!!! I ride in all kinds of weather (rain, snow, hot, cold) and my trike is no worse for wear than pulling behind my MH. Heck, even the muddy Can-Am highway construction sites' mud washed off my trike with ease. It's all about the paint finish.
Will venture to guess the toads you're alluding to either didn't have a hulu skirt hanging from the towing vehicle's rear bumper or a rock shield on the towing rig to knock down road debris. My trailer it has a rock shield that prevents most rocks and debris from doing any damage.
