The type of switch...
SPDT is a single pole double throw switch.
It will take a single wire (single pole) and connect it to one of 2 outputs (double throw).
A simple on/off type switch for single wire would be SPST - single pole, single throw....
A switch making 2 separate connections would be DPST - double pole single throw, or DPDT - double pole double throw, depending on how many outputs there are.
