You're correct in starting small.
We carried one that just clipped to the battery terminals and ran an extension cord where we needed it. It would sit right on the top step while we used it.

I've moved on to top shelf inverter and ags because the 24.1 is mostly a travelling mods experiment but the little 1500w clip on would power the microwave or coffee pot just fine as long as the engine was running.

I recommend the little inverter over a big inverter.
