You assume correctly. To move the axles forward would put them under the door. I wanted the third axle to shorten the length of the frame between the axle and the rear bumper so the cantilever is less and puts less stress on the frame with the lift. The added weight on the axles is due to the lift, the motorcycle and I have frame rails that are twice as thick as normal and a lot heavier. All my main frame rails are 1/4" sidewalls.
