Yes, No, Maybe. Lots of threads on here with different opinions. Mine opinion is, the shaft can corrode when exposed for extended periods (this is what the manufacturer says). If you don't live near the salty coast, this possibility weakens. Spray them with a light oil occasionally to protect them. I don't think it matters much today as tires are no longer bias ply and flat spots are not as much a problem as they were when the only two options you could get on a car was "radio and heater".
