Absolutely, been RVing 6 months a year down here now for 12 years. Never any issues. Most violence is targeted, unlike the random stuff happening at home in walmart, etc. You can generally avoid being a target, you can't avoid random.
Stay away from drugs and people involved in them and don't bar hop at 2 AM and in my opinion, no probem. There are places I would avoid, Tijuana, Cuidad Juarez, Acapulco etc, but i also would also avoid parts of Detriot, Chicago, LA, Oakland & New Orleans.
I certainly felt less safe in Europe the last 2 summers. I was in London when the bridge attack happened, not far away, and you notice streets in Italy blocked by armoured cars near tourist attractions
