If your tank gauge is on the side of the tank then the float has to be oriented so it works up and down. You can't tighten it just a bit it has to go in 180 degree increments. With a very slow leak the best thing to do is use the propane until the tank is empty. Remove the gauge and use Teflon tape or Teflon paste and install the gauge paying attention to the proper orientation. Not a hard job at all, just takes a bit of time
