Phone Charge Station Malware

Hackers find a way to infect public charging stations.

This may be old news to some of you. For the rest, hackers are infecting public charging stations with malware that can literally take information off your phone and watch what you do. In the the example I just saw, they got the person's bank account, call history, contacts, email addresses, credit card information and most anything else the hacker wanted.

There was no definitive way to identify infected stations or if your phone is already infected however, two things were identified as red flags:
1) The charging station asks for permission to access your phone when you plug it in.
2) The charging station can be easily removed from its mount location.

While the concentration of these seem to be in large public venues such as airports and malls, they could be anywhere. Best to know and not encounter than blindly accept everything is always ok. This hearkens back to the day of infected or replaced card readers that steal credit card info and ATM PINs. That technology is old hat but the goal remains the same.

Share as you think appropriate.
