The step cover is an easy build and was absolutely necessary for us with a 1 year old crawling around the motorhome. Ours is just a piece of 3/4" plywood cut to overlap edges with two 1x2 strips screwed in from underneath so it won't slide off the opening.
I think I'll go back and carpet it like this one. I tried to stain mine but can't get close to matching the vinyl flooring so it looks out of place.
