Glad you figured it out. I'm in the process of putting some labels on the unmarked switches. Just FYI, Amazon and others sell 12 remote control switches that would enable you to not have to go to the steps for on/off control. You would have to insert the module in series behind the switch at the door. With wiring it this way, you would have to have both switches on for the lights to work (vs a 3-way switch that allows either of two switches to work the same lights).
